What's Your Kryptonite?
I hate feeling weak.
For several months, I’ve felt like a wimp. And with wimpy, comes the need for comfort. And when I’m in need of comfort, my jeans beg for mercy from the influence of the extra tortilla chips, brownies, and ice cream.
It's times like this when I think about Superman. He was awesome. A good guy. Strong. Fixed situations and helped people. But he had a problem — a real power drain. And his nemesis, Lex Luthor, would wait for the right moment, the balance of mankind in the brink, leading Superman straight into the trap and Ta Da . . . “Oh, by the way, here’s a little Kryptonite to keep you company. Not feeling so super, are you now? Mwahahaha!”
We all have Kryptonite. Weaknesses. Power drains. Bad habits and coping mechanisms that bring momentary relief but drain us of our power. And the more we try to hide it, avoid it, and deny it, the more it seems to gain power over us.
But as soon as we talk about it and find out others also struggle, its power is unplugged, and we gain traction in fight.
Embracing and understanding our imperfections is the beginning of becoming the best version of ourselves. Admitting our Kryptonite helps us understand how to fight -- and how to support one another.
Become familiar with your Kryptonite. Become a student of you, learning how stress affects you. When you’re worn down and vulnerable, look ahead and identify, “Hm, this next week (or day) could be stressful. I need to make sure I have my healthy alternatives close at hand so I’m not tempted to cave in.”
“I know you, tortilla chips. I see you waving at me from the end cap at the grocery store, yelling about your big sale. I am familiar with your song, brownies. And I've figured out that you seem to always be around, ice cream. In the right context, you’re all great. I embrace the fact that when I’ve felt weak, you have been my favorite buddies. But I’m going to do my best to schedule a date during the weeks that I feel strong.”
