The Time Blivet

“A time blivet? Is that like a time capsule?” Not exactly.

Maybe I’m the only one who suffers from this malady, but I have blivet-itis. It’s not contagious. Nor is it deadly. But it can be exhausting and very frustrating. It’s simply not understanding the limitations of time and the reality of your ability to manage it.

For those of you who don’t know, a blivet is “5 lbs. of poo in a 2 lb. bag.” Basically, a blivet is when you cram too many things in an unrealistic containment. Like a sausage.

Your luggage can be a blivet. Your closet can be a blivet.

But my problem is time. I think I can do 20 things in 20 minutes. It just doesn’t work. Laws of physics seem to be my nemesis.

Holidays are rich in blivet opportunity. You get to see family you haven’t seen in a long time so you try to cram in every favorite activity you want to enjoy during their short stay.

Vacations and travel also provide opportunity for blivets, for both packing suitcases and time management. And then, when plans don’t work out the way you envisioned, you can get frustrated or disappointed.

If you wear many hats on a weekly basis, any day can be a blivet . . . you simply have to take the time to connect with your “must have’s” for any day, any vacation, any way that you spend yourself.

Focus on what is most important to you. Choose what is vital, that has a deadline, or anything time-sensitive. Set aside time for those people and activities first.

Everything else can just wait its turn and fill in the spaces that open up naturally. If you plan your time, you increase your flexibility and improve the productivity and enjoyment of your day. Your time management process needs to reflect your personality and the demands of life that are currently upon you.

Plan your week. Plan your day. And beware the blivet!
